What is a Word That Too Many People Use?

There are a few words I can think of off the top of my head. The Word “like” being the obvious one. I hear a lot of people use it as a filler word the way some use the noise “umm” to fill in the space while they look for the word they actually want to use.

I have a lot of issues with “like” as a filler word. The obvious one is it annoys the crap out of me because the word no longer has any meaning, and if you actually are trying to use “like” to mean “like” it can get confusing because of how overused it is. The whole point of communication is to communicate, after all.

My other issue is that it makes the person automatically sound silly and like they are using “valley girl” speech, which is difficult to take seriously.

Some people think southern U.S. accents make people seem unintelligent. I personally don’t think so, I think they take their time, but that doesn’t signify unintelligence to me. Valley girl speech however, does sound unintelligent.

It sounds like you didn’t focus in school, don’t know many words, and that you may be a bit on the younger side. Although I have heard a 40 year old talk like this so this is a stereotype for sure.

So in addition to the overused “like” I have also noticed an uptick in the increasing use of the word “right.” Right is less obnoxious and less likely to cause me to judge you, but I have noticed it trending as a not quite filler word, so much as an “I agree with you so much” term.

For example I was training someone, a perfectly capable, intelligent, very nice person. So, I am not judging them for this, it is just the first example I can recall of this, but I am seeing it more and more in conversations.

Every time I would suggest or say anything, this person would say, “I know, right?” At first it was like, okay, it is a phrase. That’s fine. But it kept happening. Over three days, I would hear, “I know, Right.” Or sometimes, just ‘Right?” Implying, I know, right? And, now I can’t unhear it. Especially at work, I heard it the other day, and it sticks out to me.

It isn’t as overused as “like.” But, it is trending up. I feel like for me it sticks out especially. It is a phrase designed to inspire camaraderie, or agreement. It isn’t bad per se. Just being the way I am, I like to vary my speech a bit. I don’t want to get stuck using the same phrase over and over.

My mind tends to get suspicious of people being nice or kind, and I tend to then think why is this person telegraphing so hard that they are on my side? Why are they agreeing so much? Are they just that agreeable or are they not really listening?

It does seem kind of an autopilot type of phrase, something one might add when they don’t have an opinion or don’t know what to say. It is ultimately harmless. And I feel weird complaining about a phrase that inspires people to agree with one another, and not argue. It seems wholesome.

I guess I am suspicious of those that agree without asking follow up questions. I also am reluctant to fall into a catchphrase type of trap because I like diversity in my words. It seems like it would be easy to fall into this one because it is so agreeable and harmless.

Writing prompt 6, a poem (ps im not a poet)

Alphabet Poem

Write a 26-line poem using all the letters of the alphabet. Have the first line start with the

letter “A,” the second “B,” the third “C,” etc.

Admiring the view of the sunrise, red star in bloom

Basking in the sunshine and rays of love caressing the skin

Casually examining the mountains reaching for the heavens with icy fingers

Dealing with the absence of a lover feeling the love of the freedom that comes with distance

Effortless beauty of blue skies and blue eyes

Finishing a cup of coffee slowly savoring the bitter taste of being alive

Gazing at the mountain tops examining the white tops of forever

Higher than the tallest trees but oh so far away from me

If only they were nearer I could climb higher and lift myself to a higher place

Journey of the mind’s eye into a paradise where sun meets moon and dances the night away

Knocking on heaven’s door and waiting to be let in

Leaving too soon and back to earth in a rocket ship of my own making

Moon in full glory shining down upon me but oh where has my sunshine gone?

Nowhere and no one to witness this pain of separation of something so simple and true

Only one view at a time cannot have heaven and hell on earth, only one rocket to the moon

Passionately awaiting the sun with its rays of warmth to fill my cold heart

Questioning existence and the point of it all, what if this is all there is?

Reveling in the aroma of coffee mixed with flowers blooming and the endless possibilities of an unwritten future

Striving for equilibrium and security but yearning for passionate adventure

True to ourselves first, others second place which will finish first?

Universal abundance and glory can be had in dreams easily enough

Vitality like sunshine and moonbeams combined to fill my being with true love and eternal hope

Wonder at the beauty of the world and how I could be a part of it all, one piece of a million to make up a whole dream

Existence based on love and loving others while being true to the self

Yelling at society and the rules imposed on the unwilling, individuals over the group can feel the world instead of suppression

Zealous in adventure and life and living and doing and being the sun and the moon

Lottay or lattee…Pronounciation and the idea of NOW

Another random musing. This one has to do with pronunciation. My parents treated me to Starbucks and are getting me snow tires because they know I can’t afford it otherwise. Well, I meant the tires, but in truth, Starbucks is also a luxury at this point.  My poor dad isn’t an espresso drinker, he doesn’t know the lingo, or how to order an espresso.  So, me and my Mom share a little chuckle at his expense when he orders me a Cinnamon Dolce LATTEY. And, then they ask what size, and I tell him, Grande. And he says, Grande? like it is a question, mumbling something along the lines of… “I feel like I’m ordering Mexican?”  And then, after thinking about it, enjoying this Latte, sipping its sweetness and feeling the warmth cascade down my throat, how did I download this innate coffee lingo? How did I get my coffee knowledge? Was there a time when I would’ve mispronounced Latte? I remember my Mom calling it “expresso” back in the day, and I found it a little embarrassing. (I was a kid, we are embarrassed by everything our parents say, or don’t say.)

But when did this lingo revolution occur? When did I get all this knowledge? Was it like the Matrix, did I lean back in a chair while someone  prepared my disc and implanted it? I honestly cannot remember learning what a latte was, or when I learned this. I remember a movie that a lot of people hated back in the day, Hudson Hawk. In Hudson Hawk Bruce Willis makes several references to cappuccino. It is kinda conspicuous, it pops up so much, in the movie, it is almost like it was the new trend or something back then. Now, you wouldn’t see that in the movie, they would just have the character get a mocha, or a latte.

It is like when all video game machines were called Nintendos. It used to be, what are you doing? “Oh, playing Nintendo.” Now it is… What are you doing? “Oh, I am console gaming while I am waiting for this WoW patch to download on my laptop while my Ipod sincs with my Itunes on the desktop, and my digital camera downloads the latest photos of me and my latest Ebay purchases while I surfed amazon.com on my Iphone….”

Yeah… and when people no longer know how to communicate or pronounce anything face to face, and it is all “Lawls” and “ROFLMAO” and “nub” and the english language won’t matter. And I’ll be wondering, when did I hear about this Latte crap? We do coffee intravenously, when did I get this knowledge? I need that Lottie in 1.5 secs, need my fix now. As I am used to faster and faster download times, I no longer have the patience to wait even the second it takes to put the coffee in a cup, I need it NOW! On that note…..lawl. 😛 *Breathe* Take a moment, take a second, to just breathe. Sometimes modern life is too much, and everyone is in the “hurry up so I can wait mode.” We can wait, we will get there when we get there. We don’t need to hurry. Take the time to mispronounce the roses…there is plenty of time.
